Why does dry HCl gas not change the colour of the dry litmus paper?

Expert Answer:

The acidic behaviour of HCl is due to formation of Hydrogen ions
Dry HCl does not dissosciate to form H+  ions and hence does not show acidic properties viz changing the colour of blue litmus to red
