why does current flow from higher potential to lower potential?

Second law of thermodynamics provides the explanation, it says
1/ Heat will always flow from higher temperature to lower temperature, never in the opposite way without any external intervention,
2/Water will flow from higher level to lower level, and never in the opposite way without any external intervention,
The current also flows from higher potential to lower potential.
