Why does an opened door vibrate when hit with a tennis ball and not go backwards without vibrating?

Expert Answer:

If the ball is heavy, like a foot ball,  and if the impact is strong , the door will be pushed back. Here there are two reasons for the door not going back:

1. The mass of the ball is less when compared to that of the door.

2.The collision (contact ) with the door was inelastic.
