Why does a fluid exert an upward force and not a solid?

Dear student,
 
The tendency of a fluid ( in this case ship floating on water) is that it can flow, it can be displaced by any volume by any solids. This effectivly delivers the upward force on the solid.
Whereas, solids cannot be displaced or neither can they flow like fluids.
 
Still, soilds do exert upward force, like the ground exerting on a mountain, on you, when yoy are standing, etc.
