Proteins are the building blocks of the body that are essential for growth. Milk, eggs, meat, fish and soyabean are good sources of proteins.

Nutritional significance of proteins:

  1. Proteins are important nutrient substances which are required for cell formation. They provide chemical materials for growth and repair of body cells.
  2. Proteins are the structural components of the body. They form the main structures of the body such as blood, skin, muscles and other body tissues.
  3. Proteins are also important for the organisation of cells and tissues. They are required for the continuous building of tissues in the body. They are essential for the maintenance and replacement of lost or damaged tissues.
  4. Proteins are responsible for transport of various components through the blood.
  5. They are required for the contraction of muscles.
