Why do we take the value of 'G' in negative when solving a numericle

'G' , the gravitational constant is always positive
I think you are talking about 'g' , i.e gravity.
So while solving the numerical ,if the body moves upwards,'g' is taken -ve
and when it falls in downward direction 'g' is taken +ve.
