Why do we take only tan theta as the original formula in heights and distances?

it's not compulsory to take tan theta as a rule. but sin and cos involve the hypotenuse which in most questions is not required to be found. it's the vertical height or the horizontal distance is required. also the given info contains one of them. that's the reason.
