why do our pigment of skin stop working in absence of sun

The primary function of melanin is to protect the skin and underlying tissue from sun damage. The more melanin a person has the more harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun he can block.

In humans, melanin present in the skin is responsible for different skin tone and the constituent of freckles.
