ICSE Class 8 Answered
Why do grapes shrink when kept in thick sugsr solution?
Asked by skarletchristian8290.8sdatl | 28 May, 2020, 10:55: AM
Expert Answer
Very strong sugar solution is hypertonic to the grape juice. Shrinking of grapes in sugar syrup is because of osmosis as in this process the liquid grape juice moves from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. The sugar syrup has high solute concentration, so the solvent moves from grapes to the outside.
