Why do fishes die as soon as they are brought out of water to land?

Expert Answer:

The respiratory organs of fish are gills. Gills are capable of absorbing dissolved oxygen from water. But they cannot use the atmospheric oxygen for respiration. Hence fish die when taken out of water.
