Why co2 release is the major activity taking place during night in plants?

Because during the day time, carbon dioxide and oxygen are balanced as the plants undergo both the processes - respiration and photosynthesis. But during night, plants do not undergo photosynthesis and release carbon dioxide due to respiration.
