Expert Answer
Carbon atom has four valence electrons.
Carbon can gain four electrons and form C4- anion or lose four electrons to form the C4+ cation.
It forms four covalent bonds by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms.
This is known as tetravalency of carbon.
Due to its smaller size, electronic configuration and maximum bond energy that is greater strength of bonds,
carbon has tendency to form multiple bonds.
Due to small size, carbon has strong tendency to form multiple bond with other
carbon atoms, oxygen atoms or nitrogen atoms.
