ICSE Class 10 Answered

Why cant the more electropositive metals be extracted by carbon reduction

The electropositive metals are the alkali and alkaline earth metals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium and also aluminium are highly reactive by nature.
And their affinity for the highly electronegative oxygen is significantly greater than that of carbon, which is also a non-metal.
So it is extremely difficult for carbon to displace a metal like magnesium and aluminium from the latter's oxide.
That is why these metals are usually isolated by electrolytic reduction of their chlorides or oxides
