why are the foundations of buildings made on large areas?

Pressure = Force / area.
The buildings are made on large blocks so that the force exerted by the building on the ground is able to exert a small amount of pressure due to large areas of the block.If small blocks are used then owing to the large pressure exerted by the building the foundation would break and the building might collapse
