Why are sound waves called mechanical waves?

Asked by  | 19th Jan, 2010, 04:19: PM

Expert Answer:

Because they need a material material medium, like solid, liquid, gas for their propogation, while electromagnetic waves can propogate through vacuum, they don't need any material medium.

They are called non-mechanical waves.

We can't hear a sound in space because of the vacuum.
