CBSE Class 11-science Answered
Why are pathogenic bacteria generally gram negative?
Asked by pb_ckt | 14 Apr, 2019, 09:19: PM
Expert Answer
The outer membrane in Gram negative bacteria is made up of Lipopolysacchrides (LPS). LPS acts as an endotoxin which contributes to the virulence in pathogenicity. It also protects the cell from different antibiotics, detergents and enzymes like lysozyme. Porin channels present in the outer membrane prevent the entry of harmful chemicals inside the cell. So, it is the presence of an outer membrane in Gram negative bacteria that makes them pathogenic.
