why are bronchioles divided into air sac?

Within the lungs, the bronchioles end in bunches of tiny round air sacs called alveoli. Walls of alveoli are provided with an extensive network of blood vessels. The significance of alveoli lie in the fact that they provide an increased surface where exchange of gases can take place between inhaled air and blood.
