When we rub a silk cloth with a plastic rod, the silk cloth acquires negative charge while the rod acquires positive charge. How? Why can't the rod acquire a negative charge?

Hi
The plastic rod loses its excess electrons thus becoming positively charged and silk cloth acquires negative charge thus becoming negatively charged.
The direction of flow of charges is always well defined; it flows from high potential area to the low potential area.
