Expert Answer
Our stomach is made up different layers-serosa, two muscle layers and inner layer mucosa which provide protection to the walls of the stomach. The stomach is protected by epithelial cells, which produce and secrete a bicarbonate-rich solution that coats the mucosa. Bicarbonate is alkaline in nature. It is a base and neutralizes the acid secreted by the parietal cells, producing water in the process. This continuous supply of bicarbonate is the main way that your stomach protects itself from autodigestion (eating its own muscles) and the overall acidic environment.
