WHAT WAS THE CONTRIBUTION OF VEERSALINGAM IN SOCIAL REFORMS?

Veersalingam was a social reformer from the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. He is popularly known as the man who first brought about a renaissance in the Telugu speaking populace and especially Telugu literature. He was influenced by the ideas and ideals of Brahmo Samaj and involved himself actively in the cause of social reforms. In the year 1876 he began publishing a Telugu journal and wrote the first prose for women. He encouraged education for women and even established a school in Dowlaiswaram in the year 1874. He also started a social organisation called Hitakarini Samajam and worked tirelessly to achieve his ideal of social reform.
