Jawahar Lal Nehru, in his book "Discovery of India" meant by the phrase 'unity in diversity' that India was always united inspite of geographical, religious and cultural differences among the people. Indian unity is not something imposed from outside but it is something deeper and within its fold. it refers to the widest tolerance of beliefs and customs.
