All the preserved traces of living organisms from the past are called fossils. They could be a part of the deceased organism such as bones or teeth or chitinous exoskeleton, foot prints or faeces of animals, imprints of leaves, or it could be a complete organism especially in case of small animals. Fossils are very important in our study of evolution.
