Expert Answer
When a heavy nucleus of elements like Uranium or Plutonium is split or when the lighter elements such as hydrogen or deuterium is used to form a heavy element, the total mass of products is less than that of participating atoms. This difference in mass is converted into energy. This energy released is given by Einstein's famous equation E=Δmc2 where 'E' stands for energy released, 'Δm' stands for difference in mass of the original and the product nuclei and 'c' stands for velocity of light which is equal to 3 x 108 m/s.
