When an alkyl halide is treated with metallic sodium in dry ethereal solution, asymmetrical alkane containing twice the number of carbon atoms present in the alkyl group is obtained.
RX + 2Na + XR → R-R + 2NaX
This reaction is used in the formation of higher alkanes from the lower alkanes.
