Hello Tanya,
Two molecules of alkyl halides (same or different) react with sodium metal in the presence of dry ether to form alkanes. This reaction is known as Wurtz reaction.
In this reaction, Alkanes are formed having even number of carbon atoms along with the formation of sodium halide.
Wurtz Reaction:
2R-X +2Na → R-R + 2NaX
