Expert Answer
Hi Gam Ram,
It is an elastic cartilage covered with a mucous membrane and is shaped like a leaf and guards the entrance of the glottis (the opening between the vocal cords).
Epiglottis acts as a switch between the larynx and the oesophagus to permit air to enter the airway to the lungs and food to pass into the gastrointestinal tract.
