what is the significance of intermediate stages in understanding the process of evolution?

Expert Answer:

Intermediate forms give an idea about the process and direction of evolution. They clearly indicate the evolution of one organism from the other. For eg. Neuropteris or tree fern is the connecting link between fern and Cycas. Like fern, it shows forked venation, while like Cycas, it bears seeds.
