What is the meaning of the statement elected representatives will be accountable to their constituency for what they do in the locality

The elected representatives are accountable to the people of their constituency. It means that since the people have voted the representative to power, he is answerable to the people of the constituency if he does not carry out the work that he promised.
For example, at the time of election, a candidate has promised to the people that after getting elected, he will open a girls school in a locality. But if he does not do so after getting elected, then he is answerable to the people. People have the right to question him as to why he has not fulfilled the promise that was made by him. He has to answer their questions.
In the next election, people may not choose him again.
