- There are two carbon atoms in the longest chain, hence the parent chain belong to ethane.
- Both the carbon atoms are involved in the carboxylic group formation, hence it is a "dioic acid".
- Thus the IUPAC name of the oxalic acid is "ethanedioic acid".
