Liquid ammonia is used as a refrigerant in ice plants because, Liquid ammonia has a high latent heat of vaporisation.
When liquid ammonia vapourises it absorbs heat from the surrounding. It is highly volatile.
It easily liquifies under a pressure at room temperature. Hence liquid ammonia is used as a refrigerant in ice plants.
