A hypertonic solution implies that a specific solute has a higher concentration. A hypotonic solution is just the opposite; a specific solute has a lower concentration.

A hypotonic solution will have a lower concentration of solutes than the solvent. A hypertonic solution will have a higher concentration of solutes than the solvent.
