Aliphatic Compounds

A major class of organic compounds that includes all those with carbon atoms linked in straight or branched open chains. Aliphatic compounds include alkanes,alkenes, or alkynes, or their derivatives.

Example ----alkane, alkene, alkyne, alkadiene, haloalkanes, etc.

Alicyclic Compounds

An organic compound in which carbon atoms are linked to form one or more rings. Aromatic compounds are excluded because of their special properties. In general, alicyclic compounds resemble analogous aliphatic compounds.

Example-------Cyclohexan (C₆H₁₂) is alicyclic, as are manyterpenes, such as menthol.

Cyclic Compounds

A cyclic compound is a, mostly organic, compound in which a series of atoms are connected to form a loop or ring. Benzene is a well known example. The term "polycyclic" is used when more than one ring is formed in a single molecule for instance in naphthalene, and the term macrocycle is used for a ring containing more than a dozen atoms.

Aromatic compounds

A compound containing at least one aromatic ring. Aromatic ring is a highly stable planar ring of atoms with resonance structures that consist of alternating double and single bonds, e.g.,benzene. Aromatic compounds are so called because of their strong, characteristic odors.
