Syngamy is the fusion of gametes to produce a new organism of the same species. In animals, the process involves a sperm fusing with an ovum, which eventually leads to the development of an embryo.
Before syngamy, the male and female gametes have to be produced through meiosis. Then these gametes have to be brought to a common location in order to facilitate syngamy or fertilization to take place.
