Expert Answer
Sporophyll is a modified leaf that bears the sporangia (structures in which spores are formed).
Sporophylls vary greatly in appearance and structure.
In the lower plants, e.g. Lycopodium, it may be a leaf that has retained its normal structure and function and shows no great specialization. In the seed plants the leaf has become highly modified and lost its photosynthetic function, as in the carpels and stamens of the angiosperms.
Megasporophyll is a leaflike structure that bears the megasporangia. In angiosperms and gymnosperms it is represented by the carpel and ovuliferous scale respectively. Microsporophyll is a modified leaf that bears the microsporangia. In angiosperms and gymnosperms it is represented by the stamens and male scales respectively.
