Expert Answer:

The principal quantum number of the valenc shell represents the period to which an element belongs.
The  group to which an element belongs can be predicted on the basis of number of electrons present in its outermost shell or penultimate shell as given below:
a)s-block        no of group =no of valence electrons
b)p-block         no of group = 10+ no of valence electrons
   c)d -block        no of group = 2 + no of (n-1) d electrons
