Regeneration is the ability of an organism to give rise to new individual organisms from their body parts. If the individual is somehow cut or broken into many pieces, many of these pieces grow into separate individuals. An organism is said to regenerate a lost part, if a substitute for the loss grows from the rest of the organism, and the substitute is a copy or almost a copy of the old lost part.
Regeneration is carried out by specialised cells. These cells proliferate and make large numbers of cells. From this cell mass, different cells undergo changes to become various cell types and tissues. These changes take place in an organised sequence. It is seen in organisms like Planaria and Hydra.
