When monochromatic light is allowed to pass through a transparent medium it gets scattered and the scattered light contains original wave length as well as lines of larger wavelength than the original lines.These lines of larger wave lengths are known as Raman lines and this effect is known as Raman effect. This is useful in the studt of molecular energy levels of liquids.
