What is principle of superposition?

Principle of superposition tells us the net displacement of the medium at any point due to arrival of more than one waves at that point is just the summation of individual displacements due to individual waves.
For example, at a particular point a wave arrive with crest and another with a trough, then the net displacement is sum of crest and trough i.e. no net displacement since a trough cancels the crest.
