The potential difference between two points is defined as the work done in moving a unit positive charge from one point to other. It is a scalar quantity.
If W joule of work is done in moving a test charge Q coulomb from point 1 to the point 2, the potential difference between the two points is
V1 - V2 = W/Q
It is expressed in volt (V).
