CBSE Class 9 Answered
Polynomials are algebraic expressions that consist of powers of variables and coefficients.
The word polynomial is derived from the Greek words ‘poly’ means ‘many‘ and ‘nominal’ means ‘terms‘,
So altogether it is said as “many terms”. A polynomial can have any number of terms but not infinite.
An example of a polynomial with one variable is x2+x-12. In this example, there are three terms: x2, x and -12.
If highest power of variable is 1 , then the degree of polynomial is one .
Example :- ( 4x-3 ) is polynomial of degree one
If highest power of variable is 2 , then the degree of polynomial is two. This type of polynomial is called quadratic polynomial.
Example :- ( x2 + 6x +9 ) is second degree polynomial or quadratic polynomial .
If highest power of variable is 3 , then the degree of polynomial is three. This type of polynomial is called cubic polynomial.
Example :- ( 2x3 -5 x2 + 6x +1 ) is third degree polynomial or cubic polynomial .
