Expert Answer:

Oxidation in terms of oxygen transfer: Oxidation is gain of oxygen

Example: in the extraction of iron ore iron(III) oxide (oxidizing agent) oxidises CO to CO2

Oxidation in terms of hydrogen transfer: Oxidation is gain of hydrogen

Example ethanol can be oxidized to ethanal

Oxidation interms of electron transfer: Oxidation is loss of electron

Example Cu2+ reduced to Cu while Mg is oxidized to Mg2+ by loss of electrons.

Cu2+ Mg ----- Cu + Mg2+
