Osmosis is the passage of water from a region of high water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to a region of low water concentration.
When a cell is placed in hypertonic solution, water passes out from the cell into the hypertonic solution. This is exosmosis.
When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, water passes from the hypotonic solution into the cell. This is endosmosis.
