A body can have both potential energy as well as kinetic energy at the same time .Mechanical energy of a body is associated with the bodies position and motion.
Mechanical energy(E) of a body is the sum of kinetic energy (K) and potential energy (V) of the body.
i.e E =K+V
Kinetic energy and potential energy of an object can change, but its mechanical energy always remains constant.
