In the process of cathodic protection of Iron, Iron metal is connected with a more reactive metal such as Magnesium, the two metal acts as two separate electrodes. The more reactive metal Magnesium will act as anode whereas Iron will act as cathode in this set up. In this set up magnesium will be oxidized and at the cathode (Iron rod) the reduction of oxygen to hydroxide ions will take place. In this process as long as we have magnesium, Iron will not oxidize.
