Members of Kingdom Animalia are divided into two phyla-Chordates and Non-chordates on the basis of presence or absence of notochord (flexible rod-shaped body). All members of Phylum Chordata show the presence of notochord.
There are few creatures which belong to Phylum Chordata, but are not vertebrates (do not show the presence of backbone). These creatures have a notochord for nerve transmission. These creatures are called notochordates.
