It is the tendency of groups of genes on the same chromosome to be inherited together. Hence the traits that are controlled by these genes tend to be inherited together.

 For example:

• In fruit flies, the genes affecting eye color and wing length are inherited together because they appear on the same chromosome.
• In sweet pea, the gene for flower colour and the gene affecting the shape of pollen grains show linkage
