Expert Answer:

Equivalent weight is defined as the number of part by weight of a substance which combines with or displaces directly or indirectly 1.008 parts by weight of hydrogen or 8 parts by weight of oxygen or 35.5 parts by weight of chlorine.

Example:

Hydrogen combines with chlorine to form hydrogen chloride as

          H2  +   Cl22HCl

           2        71

According to above equation 2 parts by weight of hydrogen combines with 71 parts by weight of chlorine

or 1 part by weight of hydrogen combines with 35.5 parts by weight of chlorine

Hence equivalent weight of chlorine is 35.5
