What is gravitational energy

Gravitational energy is nothing but the gravitational potential energy itself. It is the energy of body due to its position above the ground.
For example: If the book is kept in a shelf which is above the ground level. Then that book possesses potential energy due to the height at which it has been raised. As the gravitational force is acting on that book which is placed in the shelf, book possesses gravitaional potential energy.

Gravitational potential energy = Work done to raise the body to height h = mgh
where,
m - mass of the body
g - acceleration due to gravity
h - height at which the body is placed
