Exfoliation is a process involving the weathering of rocks. Sudden change in temperature may cause cracks and fissures in the rocks. As water percolates in these fissures, chemical weathering takes place. The sudden expansion and contraction of rocks results in the peeling off, of the outer layers of rocks. This process of weathering is known as exfoliation.
