Unlike metallic and ionic bonded compounds, covalent bonded compounds exist is units called "discrete molecules".
Because the atoms within the molecules do not change their relative position or bonding within the molecule during heating or when dissolved, they can be gases or molecular solutes. (Some molecular compounds will decompose or react with heating or with the solvent, but these are special cases).
